19th Century Russian Icon, Our Lady of Kazan
19th Century Russian Icon, Our Lady of Kazan
One of the most widespread Russian icon types, this tempura painted icon is adorned with intricate sheet metal work. The style and posture of Madonna and Child in this artistic setting represents Our Lady of Kazan, a holy icon of the Eastern Orthodox church that was miraculously found in the ashes of the great fire of Kazan. In 1612 this image was carried at the head of the army that relieved the occupation of Moscow by the Poles. Since that time- the image is known of the Holy Protector of Mother Russia. It has since been one of the most famous examples of Russian Iconography, and unfortunately the original was stolen in 1904 and remains missing to this day.
Unknown Iconographer, estimated to be from 1860 based on tempura paint condition and production of metalwork.
